Five Minute Friday is a writing event that has hundreds of writers spending five minutes all writing on the same topic and then sharing them at http://lisajobaker.com/. This week's word is Fight.
Here it is January 3 and I already feel myself fighting against my old habits of 2013. My word for 2014 is Do and I know it's going to be an exercise in retraining my thinking to keep up the challenge of this word.
What I need to remember though is Doing feels so much better than Not Doing. Moving forward, accepting new challenges, ignoring the negative voices in my head - those things are so much better than staying where I am in my comfortable, do-nothing life.
I want to Fight to be better. Fight against my old ways of thinking. Fight to look for the good. Fight to be everything God made me to be.
As I type this, there are men working outside on my house. Finally hiring people to fix the rotting wood and the curling shingles is a huge step in the fight towards making my house a home. They aren't the fun things to do but they are the things that will improve the roof over my head to the point that I can indulge in new paint colors that will bring my boring white-walled house to life.
A couple of Sundays ago, I served as the liturgist for my church. My nerves wanted to say no but my bravery won the fight and I spoke to the congregation and sat on the chancel during the service, even though the thought of people watching me all throughout the service made me shake.
And as for those negative voices in my head - you have one HUGE fight on your hands if you think you're going to win this one. You are done telling me I'm not enough, done telling me I'll never be loved, done telling me I'm alone.
Maybe my one word should have been Fight because in 2014, I'm going to do all I can to fight for the life that is waiting for me.

I haven't landed on a word yet. "Do" is a good word. "Fight" sounds like a necessary ally in "Do." May God give you all the strength you need this year to "Do" what He calls you to do. Even the mundane. You are right about those negative voices, they are challenge--they are to me--and need a swift kick in the pants.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cheryl! I hope you win your fight against the negative voices. Here's to giving them a swift kick in the pants!
DeleteDoing IS so much better than NOT doing. Good for you. I wish you a happy 2014!
