I often joke that in order to hear God, I need something obvious like a
burning bush. I pray and pray but I'm no good at listening. But today,
God stopped me in my tracks with a song, one that came up randomly as I
listened to iTunes at work.
I've been feeling very low since a friend made some seemingly innocent remarks about something she'd seen on Facebook regarding X. In a few sentences, she set back my recovery to the point that I've struggled to get out of bed the past two days. With her words, she took me back to feeling worthless, unloved, hopeless, and alone.
Out of 3300 songs loaded on my computer, this one played exactly when I needed to hear it. I stopped where I was in my office, my breath catching in my throat. As tears streamed down my face, I heard these words:
It wasn't a burning bush but while listening to Phil Wickham's lyrics, I heard God's voice tell me that I AM worthy, I AM loved, He has a future full of HOPE planned for me, and I am NEVER alone. I put the song on repeat and listened to it all day, letting the words sink in until I felt them in my bones. In no time, the sting of my friend's words was gone and I once again was back to believing that even though this isn't the life I'd planned, it could be a good, no great life.
So much better than a burning bush.

To the one whose dreams have fallen all apart
And all you're left with is a tired and broken heart
I can tell by your eyes you think you're on your own
But you're not alone
Have you heard of the One who can calm the raging seas
Give sight to the blind, pull the lame up to their feet
With a love so strong it never lets you go
No you're not alone
You will be safe in His arms. You will be safe in His arms
The hands that hold the world are holding your heart
This is the promise He made, He will be with you always
When everything is falling apart, you will be safe in His arms
Did you know that the voice that brings the dead to life
Is the very same voice that calls you now to rise
So hear Him now, He's calling you home. You will never be alone
You will be safe in His arms. You will be safe in His arms
The hands that hold the world are holding your heart
This is the promise He made, He will be with you always
When everything is falling apart, you will be safe in His arms
Cause these are the hands that built the mountains, the hands that calm the sea
These are the arms that hold the lame and they are holding you and me
These are the hands that heal the leper pull the lame up to their feet
These are the arms were nailed to the cross to break our chains and set us free
You will be safe in His arms. You will be safe in His arms
The hands that hold the world are holding your heart
This is the promise He made, He will be with you always
When everything is falling apart, you will be safe in His arms

"Sovereign Over Us" and "Not for a Moment" are songs that have stopped me in my tracks when I get stuck in the pain and ache of the realities of life. Even better than a planned song is the knock-you-out-of-your-seat, unexpectedly encouraging song.
