Five Minute Friday is a writing event that has hundreds of writers spending five minutes writing on the same topic and then sharing them at http://katemotaung.com/five-minute-friday/. This week's word is Dare.
When I read this week's word "Dare", I instantly thought of the Switchfoot song "Dare You To Move" and I was reminded of how inspirational that song is. It could be a battle cry for shaking off what has happened and moving forward. I played it as loud as I could and shook my first in the air as I listened.
It is a great soundtrack to my Word of the Year and 31 Days theme Do. I picked Do to get me moving towards a better life. The songs lyrics are perfect for that:
The photo at the top of this post was taken from a gondola in Venice. I picked it because riding in that gondola was one of the biggest dares of my life. My sister and I traveled to Europe last summer and we didn't realize that the tour we had booked to take us from Florence to Venice included arrangements for a ride on the famous canal. It was a cost we hadn't planned on and the fact that we had all of valuables with us and the possibility that those valuables could end up in the water had us declining the ride at first. But then we talked about it and how it was the quintessential Venice experience and we took the dare and climbed into the boat. I am so glad we did - it was one of my favorite parts of our trip.
I'm trying to be braver and dare myself to do things. I also find that dares can work for simple things too. I dare myself to not eat that extra portion of dinner or I dare myself to stay off the Internet at work. It is in the dares that we learn just what we can accomplish and how strong we can be.
Lyrics for "Dare You To Move"
Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone's here
Everyone's here
Welcome to existence
Everyone's here
Everyone's here
Everybody's watching you now
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next?
What happens next?
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next?
What happens next?
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift
Yourself up off by the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift
Yourself up off by the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before
Welcome to the fallout
Welcome to resistance
The tension is here
The tension is here
Welcome to resistance
The tension is here
The tension is here
Between who you are
And who you could be
Between how it is
And how it should be yeah
And who you could be
Between how it is
And how it should be yeah
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift
Yourself up off by the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift
Yourself up off by the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened
Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself
To lift yourself up off by the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself
To lift yourself up off by the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened before
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened before
